I originally wasn’t going to take an outfit photo today, but it ended up happening anyway. I had the most domestic weekend ever, including lots of cleaning, tidying, gardening, lemonade making, laundry doing, and not sleeping. Though I shy away from posting ~lifestyle~ type things on this blog, I wanted to make an exception and share some of my domestic prowess with y’all on this holiday weekend.

…like, behold: the bangin lemonade I made with mint from the window sill garden and ginger simple syrup that Alison gave to me for my birthday.

Said garden contains mint, thyme, and oregano. The rosemary isn’t doing so well, so I decided to get seed-starting. Mostly flowers, but also some basil and swiss chard. We’ll see what happens and hopefully the yard is ready for it.

That’s the yard, with my babe nabe Aimee, weeding and sowing grass seeds in the middle section. That’s also Wishbone the dog helping to dig. Meanwhile, back inside…

I decided to hang my sunglasses collection beside my mirror so I could select them for outfits accordingly. They were sitting in an old suitcase and thought they deserved more from life with the nice weather and the spring cleaning and all. Sometimes having your stuff on display is outfit-inspiring, you know?

Gives you a little more perspective.

Now it’s time to gear up for a serious Memorial Day all day grillfest with Brokelyn friends tomorrow. Say hi if you see me in Prospect Park!

Hey, thanks! I first read The Birth of the Clinic for a neuroscience class when I was at Muhlenberg. It’s basically the history of the medical system, the development of the medical profession, etc. I’d also recommend The History of Sexuality (duh), which I read for for fun/mega-knowledge-nerdery after that class. I need to read the Archeology of Knowledge and Madness and Civilization (his first published work), too, as I’ve only read excerpts.

Have you guys forgotten about the weekend already? My bike seat on the sidewalk? And all that over-saturating sunshine? Jeeze.

Allow me to remind you it was really nice out. I biked everywhere. I hit up a street fair and lots of stoop sales. I came out with 2 shirts (one new, one vintage) and a vintage skirt for a grand total of $4. Also, Rae returned from her trip to Guatemala and Mexico and bestowed this lovely bag upon me. Hippie cat lady chic and beautiful colors and leather and omg I’m stoked on it. I also found out that I do, in fact, have off work on Memorial Day. ALL GOOD THINGS.

This week is yet another sort-yr-life-out week, so I apologize if there’s not too much yet to say. I’m amidst the hustle.

Like a sexy Aunt Jemima, coming at you from rain-drenched Cobble Hill: I took this photo of myself sheltered under a tree in the midst of strolling to Trader Joe’s to buy eggplant to make eggplant parmesan yesterday. I put the photo on instagram (this here is the unfiltered version) and everyone was like “helllllll yeah” so I thought to share it on Broadist. Sorry for the lack of full-on outfit posts from me (too many headshots?). I’ve been having a pretty insane couple of weeks but I promise to get some good ones up soon. After I do my laundry…

Anyway, the scarf! “How to tie vintage headscarves” is something I’ve googled quite a few times. I have a couple tricks up my sleeve, but this look in particular provides full-head coverage and is great if there’s nasty weather outside. It’s WAY easier than it looks (doesn’t everyone say that about hair tutorials?). Also, your hair comes out unscathed if you decide to take the scarf off after a couple of hours. Can’t say the same for the bangs.

Some bloggers discuss “weekend wear” and it involves platform wedges and fisherman’s hats and other awesome beautiful stuff. My weekend wear involved zero hair/makeup/shoes and squishing lots of mud between my toes. As I was road tripping through serious humidity and dousing myself in bug spray for every waking hour, the goal was comfort. Of course, I wanted to look cute too. I tried a pairing I don’t normally play with: super loose striped v-neck crop top with high waisted floral skirt. It was fun and summery and fulfilled all my kayaking and margarita drinking needs. Thanks to Anna for documenting me in all my unpolished glory!

In honor of my upcoming birthday, I wanted to do something different and escape the city. I can’t exactly afford a vacation, so I went to PA and crashed at my parents’ cabin on the Susquehanna river.

Along came Brad, Anna, and Joe. We hung out outside all day and night, eating, drinking, and enjoying the wildlife.

We kayaked and stuff.

Brad and Anna even swam in the river.

24-year-old advice for my 14-year-old self

14 doesn’t feel so long ago… Thank you for this question. It’s fitting, because I am 24, about to turn 25, memories floating in my brain, and a nice ten years past that age. My answer is partially advice, partially things I wish I knew a lot sooner, and partially stuff I would like to say to my 14-year-old self right now.

Only hang out with people you like.
I promise that no matter your appearance, you will be loved romantically one day. By multiple people, on and off… maybe even for the rest of your life! It’ll happen.
Don’t let anyone tell you that art isn’t as important as science or math.
Be nice. You never know when someone is having a shitty day/week/month/year/life/etc.
Society operates in a way that slates women and girls against one another. The best way to resist this is to love yourself and others.
Try not to judge, but instead to observe.
Racism is real. Understand and resist.
Sexism is real. Understand and resist.
Like what you like because you like it, but recognize that your taste is informed by the culture you immerse yourself in. Be critical of the media you consume.
Don’t follow purported social guidelines to normalcy because it’s irrelevant and unrealistic. ‘Normal’ is a social construct.
Actually, a lot of things are social constructs! Get a book on social constructionism ASAP. I recommend Michael Foucault.
Speaking of Foucault, try not to pay too much $$$ for college. There are ways around it.
You are not required to respect people who don’t respect you back. Merit is everything.
You can set boundaries with your family. It may not feel like a possibility right now, but you will one day have the strength to do it.
Non-acetone nail polish remover is for suckers. Get the good shit.
