I was born! Outfit photos were taken! TRIUMPH! Friends visited from far and wide: Manhattan, Queens, and Philadelphia… and we congregated in my back yard for A Very Nice Time Acting Totally Normal.

So now I’m more of an adult than ever (age 26) and I’m not having any revelations this morning other than being supremely grateful for the 3-day-old bagel I just toasted up and ate with reckless abandon. I’m stoked my friend is visiting from Montreal this weekend, I’m stoked to be going to the Apollo for the first time this week (Charles Bradley!), and I’m stoked it’s finally FINALLY bike weather. No complaints, just florals.

I am having that Sunday afternoon moment that begs the question “WHAT DID I EVEN DO FOR THE PAST 48 HOURS?!” Seriously, what did I do? This morning I awoke early to glorious sunshine and Rae (former roommate) at my door, so we went on an adventure to Williamsburg (ie: take her dog [Olive] to the groomer). Location: Dallas, TX

Occupation: I’m the Music Director at Radio UTD, the student-run radio station at the University of Texas at Dallas, and a blogger/mixtape maker at Not A Neophyte, a blog that focuses on women and queer musicians. Other than that, I do a lot of things, including eating canned soup and setting my kitchen on fire. I like writing, but I mostly like writing fiction. I would like to write a fantasy book someday. That’s my fantasy. (Also I just really like dragons.)

What informs/inspires your style? Most of my clothes are hand-me-downs from my grandmother, who was a very flashy lady back in the 1960s. So when people ask about my clothes I would just usually say that it’s a combination of grandma/aunt style. Outside of that I’m really into Robyn and the things she wears.

All time number one favorite thing to wear: I have this pair of overalls that I probably won’t ever stop wearing. There is something very, very satisfying about hearing people say “I like your overalls,” as if they’re admitting to a fetish.

Current non-fashion obsession: I have a thing for Jeff Goldblum. I had business cards made (And by that I mean, I made business cards with Microsoft Paint) with his face on it. Someday I would like to have an impressive amount of Jeff Goldblum memorabilia that I can show off during parties. Probably not my own parties, but I would bring that memorabilia to other peoples parties just to one-up them for throwing a party.

What’s something you’ve been thinking about a lot lately? I’m about to graduate from college, and I’ve been thinking a lot about where to move on from here. It’s scary and I’m terrified, mostly because I worry that I’ll end up somewhere with people that I can’t identify with. Being a weird girl in Dallas has been kind of tough, because you have to look that much harder to find those special people that also feel alienated. When you do, though, it means the world.

What helps you feel confidence about your body, style, and general sense of self? To be candid, my predilection for outlandish clothing alienated me from a lot of people when I was younger, because in small town Oklahoma and Texas I was perceived as being absurd (to put it kindly). Growing up was really the best thing I could do (it’s the best thing anyone can do!), not just because I stopped caring if someone was snickering at my patterned cut-off shorts, but because I was able to create friendships with other women that were very validating for me.

What’s it mean to be a Broad? Being someone that you like! It sounds way more simple than it is. You need to like yourself and set that example for other women. You need to get rid of that idea that you can’t make mistakes, or that you’re worthwhile only when other girls are not.

End note: I know Chelsea because we both work in college radio. Today she wrote a great piece about the brodeo that is the entire music industry. Read it. Actually, her whole blog has a focus on women and queer musicians, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Ok, so, sorry for any/all neglect these past few weeks. I’ve been ~world traveling~ (not really) - but Roxy was in town earlier this month, and then I went to Austin for SXSW, and this is the closest thing that happened to an outfit photo while down south. It was so bizarre being in Texas and seeing SO MANY PEOPLE from NY… this for instance, was outside the Bollare Lounge, where I got to spend some time with homegirl Tanya. And picked up these sweet shades.

As to be expected my first SXSW was crazy and fun, and I saw all the bands and drank all the beer. To add to the music insanity, now that I’m back in Brooklyn, so many ladies that I know and respect are on tour right now and coming through NY in the next week - Heliotropes, Kate Nash, SUPERCUTE!, and Sallie Ford. If you’ll be at any of these shows, let’s hang out. <3

I ran that 5k that I was talking about. Here I am, at the finish line, with Claire, my amazing trainer that helped me get up the guts and stamina to do it.

Fun Fact: would do again. will do it again, actually, in May, with classmates.

Some of my goals for 2013 have been fearlessness. I’m not afraid of a 5k anymore, and one day I’ll show a 10k that I’m not afraid of it either. I’m also not afraid of looking like a tie-dyed mess in front of thousands of people and putting pictures of it on the internet.

Whoah, this was one of those weird/rare not-wearing-vintage-anything days. Feels kinda like being naked in public, though, I’m pretty proud to have my tights match the gum-speckled subway platform. A happy accident.

I wore this outfit pretty much all weekend via finding the most perfect (cheap cotton summer) dress on Friday, adding tights, and not taking it off. I leave for Austin in less than a week so my wardrobe choices have been questionably anticipatory. Can’t wait to pack warmer weather clothes and throw my camera in my bag. Austin is truly Babe City USA. Over the weekend I saw The Ruby Suns, and at SXSW some great artists I’m working with are playing: The Virgins, Bad Cop, Local Natives, Pissed Jeans, a buncha the Daptone crew, and so many mooooore.

I’m training for my first 5k and duh it’s hard. Not just because omg-running, but also because it’s a new chapter in the book of My Relationship with My Body. It’s weird, sometimes it’s sore, sometimes it feels empowering and awesome, but overall there’s just a lot of feelings all over the place.

Reframing has been a major part of my road to happiness. It doesn’t matter if I’m slow. I got up on Monday morning and ran a mile by 7:15 AM, and that’s amazing. When I first saw this picture, I saw it as, “oh god, I look like such a dork, that’ll never go on Broadist!” But here it is. Reframed, I see a big smile and the rush of friends, doggies running in the woods, and endorphins. I also saw a picture of my dad taken the same day, 400+ miles away, making the same face, wearing basically the same colors/outfit.

You don’t have to take things as they are. It might be momentarily uncomfortable, but feel around in the darkness of your insides and find a slightly more accepting way of looking at what’s around you. Maybe I’ll think of it as a hug-shaped frame. It might be cheesy, but so are nachos and I fucking love those.
