Name: Sue Smith

What do you do?: Comedic Actor & Writer (twitter.com/itsreallysue)

What informs/inspires your style?: Flowers! Prints! Earth tones! Growing up, I always thought I was born in the wrong era because I loved my mom’s old bell-bottoms and tie-dyes. Now, my style is more subdued but I wear a lot of flowing dresses, tall boots, and huge bags. I’ve lived in New York for about 10 years and I’m just starting to realize that I don’t like black, unlike most New Yorkers. I have one pair of black boots that I never wear. Black is just not me.

All-time number one favorite thing to wear (and why): Okay, I got this pair of denim shorts from H&M like 4 years ago and I absolutely love them. They are faded and worn now but I still wear them almost every day in the summer. I’m short and they make my legs look long. With a small heel, they make me feel mad sexay.

What’s something you’ve been thinking about a lot lately?: OMG, I have been sweatin these No. 6 clogs in a BIG WAY. All of my friends are getting them, except in black. (Of course!)  One girl has them in a dark brown, almost maroon, and they’re a little beat up and perfect looking. I don’t even know if No. 6 is offering them in brown right now but I want them so hard.

Current non-fashion obsession: Miranda July’s new book, It Chooses You. She interviews people who advertise random stuff in the Pennysaver (a hairdryer, a leather coat, Christmas cards). The characters she meets are just, ugh, so beautiful. The ending is fucking breathtaking.

What helps you feel confidence about your body, style, and general sense of self?: That’s a tough question! I was depressed for a long time after my dad passed away a few years ago. I gained 40 lbs (which is a lot when you’re 5’2”!) and I was very critical of myself. My identity had been so wrapped up in the way I looked. But I started working hard, at the gym and in therapy, and by the time I lost the weight, my self-worth wasn’t about my appearance anymore. It was about feeling strong. Now, I feel like I’ve done so much work emotionally and physically that I don’t have time to be self-conscious about my body. That’s not what I’m here to do. I have so much more to offer the world than what I look like. For a long time I didn’t believe that. Also, my cats, because they love me no matter what.

What’s it mean to be a Broad?: I’m a big Ani DiFranco fan and her record label’s logo is a woman wearing a dress and flexing her muscles. “Broad” makes me think of that image.

End note: Sue is an old co-worker turned friend and fellow Brokelyn freelancer. She recently starred in Brokelandia, a parody team Brokelyn created of the IFC show Portlandia. Sue also wrote and stars in a hilarious new solo show at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade called Minimum Rage, a comedy about her shitty jobs and anger problem. It runs on February 9th at 8pm and February 16 at 9:30pm. You can make a reservation here: http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/shows/view/2946
